For most, the window from late spring through to early autumn, say October to April, is ideal. You will find the walking tracks more agreeable and have longer days to put in on the coast. But do not think of the Otways as anything but a year round proposition. Winter has its appeal with less foot traffic, moody rainforest and waterfalls in full flow; summer is for the beaches and coastal drives.

Thalia Hayes here. I have come to the conclusion that an enjoyable time in the Otways is not about having a forecast to die for so much as aligning your plans with the season. One must pack for four seasons and give yourself enough margin for the winding roads out of Melbourne, and verify access conditions beforehand. Rainforest and the Great Ocean Road are not the same thing when it comes to behaviour.

Choosing Your Season

What is best for the Otways is a matter of priority. If you want a day by the coast then summer is without question the way to go. For cooler walks there is autumn; winter is when you are rewarded at the waterfalls; and spring will see you out with the wildflowers and wildlife.

The park is extensive, making for a varied Otways coastal drive, from the inland rainforest to Cape Otway and Apollo Bay along the Great Ocean Road. There can be a marked difference in the temperature between Lorne and Triplet Falls for instance.

A Quick Guide To Seasonal Planning

Season

Best For

What one can expect

Things to bear in mind

Summer

The coastline, long drives and beaches

Warmer by the coast and plenty of daylight

Heat, bushfire closures and the crowds of school holidays

Autumn

Sightseeing and the hiking trails

The forest puts on colour and the days are cooler

Do not be surprised by a sudden shower or lack of light

Winter

Cosy accommodation, the rainforest and waterfalls

Expect cool, wet weather and good waterfall volume

Some road and track closures, slippery ground

Spring

Rainforest and wildlife

Brighter days and new growth if the variable temperatures allow

Wind, rain and the odd change in the tracks

Take this table as a guide to your planning, not something the weather gods will honour. Parks Victoria’s information for Great Otway National Park should be consulted for any alerts or closures prior to departure.

On The Weather In The Otways

It is a cool climate and given to change in Great Otway National Park. More rain falls here than in many an inland corner of Victoria, particularly over the forested ranges. This is what gives the streams and waterfalls their character but also means boardwalks can be slick and there may be fog or downed branches.

Do not be guided solely by the figure on your app. Cloud, wind and how long you are under the dense forest will have more bearing on your comfort than the temperature.

How Rain Affects Things

An Otways visit is not spoiled by rain. A little of it can be quite atmospheric in the rainforest and the waterfalls all the better for it. Put heavy rain in the equation and unsealed roads become rough going, visibility goes and a short walk is made into a muddy affair.

One does well to remember that a forecast for the Great Ocean Road is not indicative of the whole park. What you have at Port Campbell or Lorne will not necessarily be the case further inland.

Making The Most Of Summer

Travellers looking for a flexible day out with the beaches and lookouts will find summer in the park suits them. With some sensible organisation of the route you might start in Lorne, make your way to Apollo Bay and Cape Otway and still fit in a stop in the rainforest.

Then again it is the busiest time of year. Car parks get taken up in the school holidays and parts of the Great Ocean Road are like sardine tins. Make an early start from Melbourne and have water to hand; do not count on finding a space at every campsite or picnic area.

Activities For The Season

Beaches and the coast around Apollo Bay and the Great Ocean Road are very much a summer affair. The same holds for the lighthouse at Cape Otway where the length of the day affords you time for the return journey and some scenic detours. And with the shade provided by the trees the rainforest walks are no problem in summer. The Maits Rest Rainforest Walk is within the means of most visitors, but one should be wary of the boardwalks when they are wet. A pair of shoes with some grip is to be preferred over smooth soled fashion trainers; your ankles will thank you for it.

Then there is the matter of bushfire risk. In windy, hot and dry weather this can put an end to access and a park may be closed on short notice. Do not be tempted to disregard a closure sign just because the track is quiet and the sky seems benign.

Autumn: a time to slow down

In the Otways autumn is perhaps the most agreeable season for the hiker. The heat of summer has abated, and save for the school holidays the trails are not as crowded or hurried. It is ideal for putting together an itinerary that is well balanced: a rainforest walk and a stop at a waterfall followed by some of the Great Ocean Road, all without being in the thick of the day’s warmth.

Walkers will find the cooler conditions more to their liking on longer or steeper forest tracks. Erskine Falls close to Lorne is a highlight and easily reached, yet the stairs and the climb back will test you if you have on too much or are in a hurry from one place to the next. Daylight is also in shorter supply in autumn. Put in more time than the map would have you believe, winding roads and a bit of wildlife or photography will put a drag on the day. I have been known to plan a circuit of waterfalls under the impression that every road was flat and straight. An optimistic mistake that turned my coffee into dinner.

Weekdays are best for a quiet outing, stay away from public holiday weekends. Bookings for Lorne or Apollo Bay go fast if the forecast is uncharacteristically sunny.

Making the most of winter waterfalls

One does not come to the Great Otway National Park in winter for a warm day at the beach, but for the wet forests and the quieter tracks it is very rewarding. The likes of Triplet and Erskine Falls will have more force to them thanks to the rainfall. You will have to put up with mud and slick steps and low cloud for it. Leave the umbrella at home, on an exposed coastal path it is little more than a sail; a waterproof layer is what is called for.

Winter demands a certain amount of forethought. Get an early start and have a torch for the way back. There is no point in trying to drive through water or put in a climb over a barrier, and where a road is closed the signed diversion is better than an old map on your phone.

It is a season for the photographer or the couple who like to take their time, less so for those with young children or any expectation of dry clothes and outdoor dining all day. Camping is an option though the nights are colder than the coast would lead you to think, so see what the campsite has to offer and make sure of your booking. Or base yourself in Lorne or Apollo Bay for a day trip and have the comfort of it.

Spring brings out the wild side of the Otways

The rainforest is in full voice in spring and the edges of the forest put on some colour. Make an effort to be still and the wildlife will show itself, particularly in the morning or late afternoon rather than in the bustle of midday. You might spot a koala in its element but do not count on it. There is no need to shout or make a sudden stop in an unsafe spot to get a look in. Patience and a quiet demeanour will serve you better than striding along with a phone in hand.

A light waterproof and something to block the sun should be in your pack, the weather has a mind of its own and can turn from mild to cold rain in the course of an outing. Even if the forest seems to be a shelter, the wind and rain will find the open parts of the track.

Maits Rest and other walks of a shorter nature are good in spring for the fresh look of things without the summer heat. Stick to the mark of the track after a rain, the soft ground of the forest is easily harmed.

Time Waterfalls And Rainforest Walks

As for timing, winter and early spring will give you the flow you want at the waterfalls if you go after a fall of rain. For the rainforest a cool morning suits any season. And with wildlife, come early and be about your business quietly; nature has no reservations.

A hasty snapshot from the side of the road will not do Triplet Falls justice; one has to put in the time and effort. Factor in the drive, parking, a leisurely walk over the steps and where the ground is wet. For an itinerary centred on Lorne, Erskine Falls is more readily accommodated, though expect the return route and viewing spots to be crowded at times.

Walks should be chosen with ability in mind.

Stop

Good For

Practical Reality

Maits Rest Rainforest Walk

For some short rainforest sightseeing

The boardwalks and dampness call for a sure foot

Erskine Falls

To see the waterfall close to Lorne

Some may find the climb back and the steps demanding

Triplet Falls

Forest and waterfall walks

Make allowances for uneven terrain and the winding roads to get there

Cape Otway Lighthouse

Open views and a bit of coastal history

Then again, wind and weather or the drive itself can alter your plans

The thing most people miscalculate is how far apart the attractions are. On paper they look proximate but the park is deceptively large and the roads do not run straight. Pick two or three things of note instead of a frantic day of ticking off everything.

The Otways Coastal Drive

Do not think of this as a mere way to get from town to town, make it a full-day affair. The road is there to be stopped at frequently and Lorne, Apollo Bay and Cape Otway all have their due. An early start from Melbourne means you can be in Lorne or Apollo Bay without being tied to the clock. Put in extra time for the odd cyclist, wildlife, traffic or a scenic pull over. Top up on fuel in the quieter stretches and have a fully charged phone; reception cannot be taken for granted.

A Day Trip Done Right

One day calls for a coastal section and either a rainforest or waterfall. A sensible plan might be to go from Melbourne to Lorne and on to Apollo Bay with a walk in between. Tackling Port Campbell, the lighthouse and a few waterfalls in one go will mean you are in the car more than you are sightseeing.

Make an early departure from Melbourne and put in at Lorne for a coffee and to refuel while you have a look at the coast.

Do not put in both Maits Rest and Erskine Falls, pick one.

Head to Apollo Bay and give yourself time for a meal and any road delays.

In winter or when it is wet, be back before dark.

Away from the main towns public transport is hard to come by. Rideshare in the park is not reliable so a private car is best for flexibility, unless an organised tour appeals to those who would rather not negotiate the winding roads.

What To Pack

It is a simple matter of packing well to avoid the usual issues of a dead phone when you need the map, an empty bottle or wet socks. Better layers in place of a lot of outfits.

Waterproof jacket and sun protection with a warm layer.

Shoes with a good grip, first-aid kit and spare socks.

Food and water, a power bank and offline maps for your phone.

Insect repellent for the still parts of the forest and at dusk.

Medication, hand sanitiser and rubbish bags.

At the more frequented sites, particularly in school holidays, parking is at a premium. Stick to marked bays and do not block access or park on a narrow bend. Observe fire restrictions, use the facilities and take your rubbish with you.

Who Should Go

The Otways are for the independent type, families with flexible days, photographers, walkers and those who like to mix coast and forest. Not so much for anyone with a rigid timetable or who expects flat tracks and unbroken sunshine.

Your costs will be what you make of them. A self-drive with packed food and the free walking areas is straightforward, whereas putting up in Lorne or Apollo Bay will add to the budget. Check on campsite and tour charges prior to booking as they are subject to change.

Some Otways Questions Answered

Here is the short of it before you load the car: the Otways are for those with preparation and patience.

When is the time to go?

October through November and March to April are well balanced with no peak-summer hassles. If it is the beaches and long drives you are after, summer is the answer; for the waterfalls, go in winter.

How many days?

You can do a major walk and a coastal stop in a day. But for a less car-bound trip that includes Cape Otway and the rainforest, allow two or three.

Is it rainy?

More so than inland Victoria, yes. It is what makes the forest and waterfalls what they are but also the cause of difficult roads and slippery tracks. Have your waterproofs to hand in any season.

What of the weather?

Expect changes brought on by wind and cloud, and it will be cooler in the forest than out on the coast. Consult the local forecast for each leg of the journey as Great Ocean Road conditions are not the same as further in.

Worth it in winter?

For the atmosphere of the rainforest and the waterfalls and fewer people, certainly. Just be prepared for some track closures after bad weather and put in the warm waterproofs.

Make The Season Work For You

There is no one right time to visit Great Otway National Park. Winter has the best waterfall conditions if you can get in, summer the beaches, and late spring and autumn a fine all-round compromise.

Leave room for the weather and check conditions. Plan your stops accordingly and you will have time to properly see the forest and put in a safe stop for a view without racing the sunset.

The answer in brief is a matter of maintenance, conservation and safety. One has to ask why certain cliff-edge locations are being walled off; it is down to the hazards they present. These are popular places and as such are subject to rockfall, storm damage, erosion and the like, not to mention overcrowding and visitors who do not act with due caution. Fencing is put in place to mitigate the risk of a fall while the authorities can get on with inspecting and making any necessary repairs or redesigns to the access.

A closure is not to be read as permanent, nor does it indicate the view is beyond redemption. For the most part it is a case of the site requiring a thorough safety review before the public is let in again. I have been surprised, as Thalia Hayes, not so much by the fence but by the number of people who think a lookout is inherently safe if there is a car park and a pin on Google to mark it.

Protection for the Lookouts

Visitation patterns have altered and that is why more of these spots in the Blue Mountains are under close management. A location that makes for good sunrise or wedding photography will have social media bringing in hordes to a small ledge in a matter of days.

To the casual observer a fence is an annoyance, yet it is a practical way of demarcating stable viewing ground from what is environmentally sensitive or simply not sound. It is about visitor safety and letting the agencies determine what the site can stand.

The Selfie Is Not Worth It

From a photograph an unfenced clifftop in the Blue Mountains may appear straightforward enough, but in person it can be uneven and treacherous. Add to that the wind, loose gravel, poor visibility and wet sandstone and one misstep is a serious matter.

Then you have the unsafe behaviour: standing on a narrow shelf, climbing over something or having someone take “one quick shot” right up against the edge. The camera is no bigger than your hand but the fallout can be. Fencing leaves no doubt as to where one should go and keeps people off unassessed terrain.

Risk and the Numbers

When more people are on a track or a narrow platform the risk is compounded. There is pushing, paths get blocked and pedestrians are distracted into stepping where they should not. You will not find a single figure for visitor numbers that accounts for all the closures in the region; it is different at every national park and council reserve, and depends on the weather, the day of the week or whether it is school holidays. So the data is cross referenced with incident reports and engineering opinion.

What the statistics do not show is that a raw total is only part of it. A big site with room to spare is not the same as a smaller lookout with a confined platform which can become unsafe in short order.

In the Matter of Fencing

It provides a line for the visitor and allows managers to put right a hazard without having to put up with people in the work area. It also spares emergency crews from having to make their way to an injured party on uncertain footing.

You will see balustrades, gates and handrails at the Three Sisters, Govetts Leap or around Wentworth Falls; what is done is dictated by the site.

Temporary Does Not Mean Pointless

And a temporary closure has its purpose. It gives crews the opportunity to do their job, be it replacing a balustrade or sorting out drainage. People are often taken aback because the damage is not always on display. A platform can seem solid enough but the ranger or engineer will be aware of a drainage issue on the slope or an unstable sandstone edge.

Fragile Clifftop Habitats Under Protection

There is more to the fencing than keeping people from a fall; it is there for the sake of the thin soils on sandstone plateaus, the local flora and the rare clifftop ecosystems. Put these areas to repeated trampling and they will be hard put to recover in any reasonable time.

An informal track made by visitors will have rain running over the exposed soil instead of into stable ground. Erosion will be hastened, plant roots damaged and sediment will make its way to the drainage lines. A two minute shortcut can put a scar on the land for years, but nature has little regard for our schedule.

The Mark of Foot Traffic

Plants are the direct casualty of foot traffic, yet it also alters water’s course. Widened tracks put a concentration on runoff and compacted soil will not take up as much of it. In a downpour that means washouts are more likely and small landslides can be the result.

Fences in sensitive spots are for the protection of the habitat and the visitor alike. To keep wear where it can be managed one must stay on marked paths. At times the prudent environmental move is to shut an informal viewpoint and put in a sturdier, safer platform.

Lincoln’s Rock And The Like

Take the case of Lincoln’s Rock, a well known instance of when a favoured place for photographs requires some restriction. It has a dramatic setting and fine outlook but with the crowds comes unsafe conduct and strain on the ground.

A temporary closure at Lincoln’s Rock could be due to erosion or weather damage, access works or a safety review. One should heed the latest direction from the locality and not an old post on social media; a picture from last summer is no guarantee the track is sound today.

Then there are other sites

Then there are Wentworth Falls, Leura, the Three Sisters, Govetts Leap Lookout and the Prince Henry Cliff Walk where things can change in a hurry. A side path may be off limits while the main viewing area is open.

Before heading out, consult the NPWS (National Parks and Wildlife Service) or the Blue Mountains City Council for their current advice. The NSW National Parks site for the Blue Mountains is a sensible place to begin your planning.

Storms and the Aftermath

In the Blue Mountains you will find walking tracks closed for rockfall, fallen trees or the like following a storm. Wind will put branches in the way on a narrow track and heavy rain can do its work on steps and drainage. There may be instability underfoot even if the path appears dry.

For the maintenance crew it is a matter of getting in safely to clear debris, put in new railings or do a geotechnical assessment. Fire recovery presents its own risks with vegetation gone and trees prone to come down.

Why Repairs Take Time

Time is of the essence with repairs in steep bushland but it is physical work and at the mercy of the weather. You cannot rush it without making another issue a few metres down. Do not read too much into a closure sign; the work is being done behind the scenes or the site is not yet safe to declare. Barriers and detours are just part of the process.

Making a Safer Visit

It is best to plan before the drive into the mountains. Make allowances for parking and walking and count on poor mobile reception. When the forecast calls for wind or low cloud, consider the landscape a worksite in flux and not a postcard.

This is not a region for those who want every vantage point to be within easy reach of the car and flat. It is for the traveller content with a measured pace and uneven terrain.

A Checklist for Planning

NPWS and council alerts should be reviewed prior to leaving, as should any restrictions on Blue Mountains lookouts.

Enclosed shoes with a sure grip are advisable, along with a rain layer and water, morning conditions notwithstanding.

Stick to what is marked and give other visitors space on a tight platform. Fencing is to be obeyed.

On a weekend or during school holidays factor in some extra time for queues and the odd detour.

Children are to be kept close and a barrier is not something to be taken as an option.

A Practical One-Day Plan

For a single day it is better to forgo the pursuit of every well known viewpoint and put in some time at an open walking section or a couple of lookouts that are easy to get to. One could make a plan to be near Leura or Wentworth Falls in the morning and put in an afternoon at the Three Sisters, provided there are no transport or closure issues to contend with.

There is more to be had from driving in terms of flexibility but one has to be aware parking will be at a premium at the popular spots. Some of the town lookouts and walking routes can be reached by public transport if you have verified the return connection and how far the walk is. Do not expect the day to come without cost; put aside money for a café and your food and transport as well. Fares and parking fees are liable to change so see what they are before you set off.

What Most Visitors Get Wrong

To think that because the car park is open so is every track in the vicinity is the most common error. Then there is the tendency to regard a fence as something to be circumvented. A closed route is closed for a reason; going over and around it puts you in harm’s way with un-inspected hazards and does nothing for the vegetation in its recovery.

Weather is another thing travellers do not give enough credit for. You may have a fine dry morning but by lunchtime it is wet and windy on the escarpment. There is no glamour in a phone with charge to spare or good footwear, any more than in having to tell a rescue crew the shoes were a matter of aesthetics.

When To Turn Around

If the way ahead is no longer clear, or there is water on the track, or trees look as though they might not be stable, then turn back. Slippery ground and poor visibility are reasons enough. A photograph is no substitute for assessing the situation on the ground. Should the authorities say a lookout is off limits, find an alternative instead of making for the barrier to “have a look”.

It can be dispiriting to have driven a long way only to be met with fencing. But to adjust the plan and take it as information is the sensible thing to do. No itinerary is worth a fall and there will be another day for the ideal view.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Being Done To Protect The Blue Mountains?

You will find visitor fencing, safety reviews, work on tracks and drainage, measures to control erosion and protect habitat, and the odd temporary closure. Which authority is responsible for a given reserve, track or lookout will depend on whether it is under the National Parks and Wildlife Service or the Blue Mountains City Council.

Why Is Lincoln’s Rock Temporarily Closed?

The site may be shut while access works are carried out or to deal with storm damage, erosion and other conditions of concern to the authorities. An old review or post is no guide to what is happening now, so check the official notice first.

Why Is Lincoln’s Rock Closed?

Public access is curtailed when it cannot be done safely or the environment requires it. The relevant authority will have issued advice as to why. Recent photographs from visitors should not be taken as an indication a closed site is safe.

How Are The Three Sisters Under Threat?

Foot traffic, numbers of visitors and unsafe conduct put pressure on the viewing areas and the Three Sisters, not to mention the damage to local flora. With path management and education of the public and the provision of platforms and fencing, those impacts are kept to a minimum.

Are Blue Mountains Lookouts Closed Permanently?

As a rule a closure is of a temporary nature or confined to an access point or platform, but one never knows. Major repairs, rockfall, fire recovery or a landslide can put a stop to things for longer. Be sure to check for alerts on the day.

The Practical Takeaway

The Blue Mountains are seeing a lot of use in places not designed for it, hence the increase in fencing. It is a means of mitigating the risk of a fall, of insulating clifftop ecosystems and of allowing for proper inspection and repair.

A good visitor is not the sort who makes for every ledge but will respect a closure and stay on the marked track, leaving the bush as they would like to find it. The views are to be had but not at the price of a call for rescue or trampling the place for a photo to show later.

sedano, olio, alloro, salvia, sale. Facoltativo: 4 fette di pane casareccio
tostato.

Preparazione:
e i pomodorini tagliati a metà. Salare e cuocere per una decina di minuti. A
questo punto aggiungere la crema di ceci, i ceci interi e un po’ della loro
acqua di cottura, in modo che la zuppa non diventi troppo liquida.
Cuocere tutto insieme, regolando
di sale, per una decina di minuti.
Servire con un filo di olio a crudo
e, se si vuole, con le fette di pane tostato.

Meta: A look at the way UV from Australia will fade and alter the colour of your semi-permanent makeup, as well as complicate the healing process.

This is an overview of how to keep cosmetic tattoos from going patchy or losing their colour. In Australia the sun can be unforgiving regardless of what the thermometer says, making it essential to put some protection on a daily basis if one has had microblading, lip blush or permanent eyeliner done.

I am Thalia Hayes, a skin therapist and salon trainer in Melbourne. It is not uncommon for me to have a client who has been model in following aftercare only to see their pigment retention suffer after they have put in a long afternoon by the pool or at the beach with the dog, hatless. The sun is hardly being malicious, it is just very adept at making trouble in a quiet way.

The Impact Of UV On Your Makeup

Then there is the matter of premature fading and colour changes that UV exposure brings about. If you are in direct sunlight often enough, pigment particles can break down and the skin will become more inflamed and turn over faster; all of which means a shorter life for your cosmetic tattoo. Learn more about permanent eyeliner color changes.

It is a slow process. An hour in the sun at lunchtime will not do away with your brows, but leave them to the elements and the colour will become less even, or duller, warmer or cooler. How it turns out is also a function of the pigment used, the depth of the treatment, skin type and the quality of the healing.

Uneven Fading

You will not find the sun treating every part of a procedure alike. More light may be on the brow arch or the centre of the eyelid than the rest, giving an untidy, patchy result. Drier, more textured skin from too much sun can rob a tattoo of its crispness even though the pigment is still there.

Pigment And Sunlight

Ultraviolet radiation is responsible for cosmetic tattoo fading through a combination of breaking down the pigment and altering the skin about it, inducing dryness and inflammation and hastening the loss of surface cells.

Do not mistake a colour shift for a case of the technician having put in the wrong shade. Over time the body and the environment will do their work and a healed pigment can seem ashier, softer or not as saturated.

There are many reasons for colour to change in semi-permanent makeup.

Apart from UV, there is oil, retinoids, exfoliation and the pigment mix itself. You will not bleach a tattoo in a single swim in salt or chlorine, but doing so regularly will irritate and dry the skin. And while sunscreen is good at limiting further exposure, do not think it is a panacea for colour issues; it will not put back what has faded or right a shift that calls for a professional eye.

Varying Degrees of Care

One should not treat a cosmetic tattoo as if it were on any old piece of skin. The thickness of the skin, where it is situated and what products come in contact with it will determine how fast the results of a microblading or eyeliner will change.

Understanding those differences helps you choose sensible aftercare rather than treating every cosmetic tattoo as if it were on the same patch of skin.

Brows

With microblading the strokes are near enough to the surface that the sun can make them fade ahead of schedule. Add in sweat, friction from a hat and skincare and the colour softens. Some would like to think it will be the same for years to come but most need a colour boost eventually; a practitioner is best placed to say when the skin is ready for more.

Lip Blush / Eyeliner

The lips are subject to wind, eating and drinking as well as the odd lick or rub, so balm and sun protection are called for once they have healed. As for permanent eyeliner, sunglasses are a sensible form of defence when you are out and about. The line may take on a warmer, softer hue which can unbalance the eye area.

Protecting New Work

Any fresh semi-permanent makeup is at a disadvantage while the skin is mending. The barrier is not yet normal and there may be some swelling, tenderness or lymph present. Uneven healing and added discomfort are risks of direct sunlight in the course of your recovery. Then there is the matter of heat, dust, sweat and unclean hands to complicate aftercare. Put off any notions of a heroic day at the beach or a hard session on the cross-trainer for now.

Healing Comes Before Holidays

Clients are often taken aback at the inconvenience of the first few days when I put cosmetic tattoos to them. One will have made plans for a coastal weekend with new brows, then find that the itinerary has been reduced to donning a hat, some swimming and being very particular about cleansing.

Make sure to plan treatment in a way that fits with life. Put in some extra time before a wedding or holiday, an outdoor job or a protracted road trip. You would not want to be improvising aftercare on the Stuart Highway or the Gibb River Road, or at a summer festival.

Sun Avoidance After Treatment

For the initial phase of healing, say 7 to 14 days, one should generally eschew any sun exposure on purpose, though your practitioner’s protocol will dictate the specifics. Open or weeping skin is not to have sunscreen put on it unless a qualified practitioner says otherwise.

It is several weeks before things fully settle. Deeper pigment may yet be stabilising even if the surface appears to be healed, so do not see the calendar as some kind of magic switch and keep up sensible protection past the first fortnight.

A Practical Timing Guide

One day before a trip and the treatment? Rest, get quiet transport and make for the shade. Do not book a touch-up and then put in a long hike and a pool visit simply because the system will let you.

Protecting Makeup In Australia

In these parts good aftercare in the summer is largely a case of simple behaviour done consistently. The temperature is no indication of how strong the sun is; on a cool or windy day the UV in Australia can still be high.

Have a look at the Bureau of Meteorology’s UV Index before you commit to being outdoors. When it is 3 or more, particularly midday, take sun protection for granted. Additionally, practicing sun-smart habits is crucial to protect healing skin beyond just sunscreen application.

Build A Physical Barrier

There will be times in the early stages of healing when a physical barrier is better than sunscreen. A wide-brimmed hat to cover the brow and forehead, sunglasses to keep the light and any urge to rub at the eyes at bay.

Opt for shade in the height of the day and no tanning.

After a brow procedure a loose, clean hat is in order, but be careful of the area.

For eyeliner, sunglasses are for comfort as well as protection.

Towels, pillowcases and hands should be kept clean while the skin is mending.

Let the practitioner give you the all clear before you get in a saltwater or chlorine pool.

For sport or travel of any kind, physical coverage is to be preferred over the memory of reapplying a product and it will not sting newly treated skin.

Using Sunscreen Correctly

Once the skin has closed and is properly healed, an SPF is of use for semi-permanent makeup. Go with a broad-spectrum 50+ and apply as the product dictates, minding the eyes and any irritated patches.

But an SPF is no licence for time outside. Fifty plus does not block every sort of UV nor mean you can remain in the elements fifty times as long with impunity. Add clothes and shade to your routine and reapply once you have been in the water or dried off with a towel.

What Most People Get Wrong

You will see people put sunscreen on their nose and cheeks and leave it below the brows. Some reach for an old tube in the glovebox, skimp on the amount or miss the hairline and upper lip. It matters in the case of cosmetic tattoos which are apt to get incidental sun.

Do not be scrubbing a fresh treatment with it. During the healing process put it to your practitioner as to what is safe. Afterward be gentle with application and do not exfoliate aggressively over the pigment.

Planning Touch-Ups Wisely

One should let the state of the pigment dictate when a cosmetic tattoo is in need of a touch-up, not some arbitrary calendar date. For certain individuals an annual colour boost is all that is required; for others it is better to allow more time between sessions or to see that the skin has put any prior work behind it.

Lifestyle, the type of skin one has and how it is looked after will have a bearing on the timing as much as sun exposure does. A person with an outdoor occupation in the Pilbara will be on a different maintenance schedule than his counterpart in Melbourne who is indoors most of the day.

When To Have An Assessment

If the colour is patchy, has taken on a life of its own or is no longer in keeping with your natural colouring, put in for a professional review. The practitioner ought to examine the skin before applying any further pigment, especially where there is sensitivity or inflammation. There is no point in booking a touch-up on recently exfoliated or sunburnt skin; compromised skin makes for less predictable healing and can be more uncomfortable under the needle.

Those Who Require More Attention

A more considered protection routine is called for by those with a history of strong sun exposure, who are in the habit of swimming or making frequent beach visits, or whose job or holidays are active. It is also true of anyone whose use of retinoids or exfoliating acids leaves the skin sensitive.

Then again, semi-permanent makeup is not for everybody. Professional advice is in order first for anyone with a medical condition, active infection or a propensity for scarring, or for those on particular medication. And if you are under the impression a cosmetic tattoo will not change, a consultation would put things in perspective. Semi-permanent is just that, involving some maintenance and fading from time to time. You will not find permanent perfection anywhere but in an advert.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clients come to me wanting a straight answer and none of the usual salon jargon, so here are the ones I get asked.

Semi-Permanent Makeup: What Are The Drawbacks?

There is a risk of infection with poor hygiene, of an allergic response, or of being left with a shape or colour you do not like. Fading, unevenness and colour shift are possibilities, as is the prospect of having to go back for correction or removal down the track. All of this, and the fact that results will alter with age and exposure, should be part of a good consultation along with the risks and aftercare.

Is It Necessary To Shun The Sun Post-Microblading?

You should, at least while the skin is in the early stages of healing. Heed what the practitioner says. Seven to 14 days is the norm though it can take the skin longer to settle. Put on a clean hat and stay in the shade instead of putting sunscreen on unhealed skin.

The Duration Of Semi-Permanent Makeup

That depends on the pigment used, the treatment, UV exposure and the way you live and care for your skin. With eyeliner, lip blush or microblading the effect will tend to soften rather than vanish on cue. Some opt for a colour boost in a year’s time, some bide their time. Let the practitioner make the call on whether to add pigment.

Who Should Steer Clear Of Permanent Makeup?

Postpone it and get the right counsel if you have open skin, an active infection or anything medically speaking that could impede healing. Those with allergies to cosmetic ingredients or a record of abnormal scarring should have a word before they book. Be open with the practitioner about any medication or health matters.

Will Sunscreen Put A Stop To Fading?

Not entirely. While SPF 50+ and a broad-spectrum formula will cut down on UV exposure, they are no substitute for a hat and sunglasses and they will not put right pigment that has already been affected. Consider it a means of slowing things down.

In Australia the sensible approach to looking after semi-permanent makeup is a mix of proper healing and long-term sun protection. Once the skin has recovered apply your broad-spectrum sunscreen and keep out of the direct sun. Only have a touch-up done when the skin warrants it.

I would advise you to regard UV protection as integral to the treatment and not something optional. Take a few minutes to check the Australian UV Index and don your hat; it is a simple matter of preserving the result and the pigment for as long as possible.
