Giornata Mondiale delle Api: alla scoperta dei progetti dedicati in Italia e nel mondo

“Se l’ape scomparisse dalla faccia della terra, all’uomo non resterebbero che quattro anni di vita”. Con questa frase Albert Einstein ci ricordava l’importanza delle api, impollinatori instancabili e custodi della biodiversità.
Il 20 maggio 2025 si celebra la Giornata Mondiale delle Api, per onorare ed approfondire l’importanza di questi fondamentali impollinatori attraverso esperienze di sostenibilità, tradizione e innovazione. Dai progetti urbani di New York e Vienna ai paesaggi alpini di Courmayeur e floreali del Sudafrica, il viaggio continua con l’arte del miele in Oman e le iniziative di apicoltura nei viaggi sostenibili di Evaneos. Da segnalare anche le esperienze immersive in California e le attività dell’hotel Le Massif Courmayeur, pensate per avvicinare i più piccoli al mondo delle api. In Alto Adige, l’Hotel Terme Merano ospita una casa delle api sul tetto, offrendo un’opportunità unica per esplorare il mondo dell’apicoltura. Un invito a scoprire la bellezza dei paesaggi in fiore, attraverso esperienze in Italia e nel mondo.

Alla scoperta delle api: esperienze autentiche con Evaneos tra Grecia e Uganda

Evaneos promuove esperienze autentiche legate all’apicoltura, valorizzando il rapporto tra uomo, natura e territorio. In Grecia, il viaggio nel Peloponneso sud-occidentale permette di scoprire la tradizione apistica nei villaggi della Messenia, con incontri con apicoltori e workshop sul mondo delle api. La sua è una produzione artigianale attenta al benessere delle api e profondamente radicata nel territorio. Certificato dal marchio Made in Courmayeur, il suo lavoro valorizza il patrimonio agroalimentare locale. Lo stesso spirito anima Lo Matsòn, la storica vetrina dei prodotti valdostani, che festeggia 25 anni, offrendo un’occasione per scoprire e sostenere le eccellenze del territorio. Un impegno concreto che riflette la profonda connessione tra Courmayeur, la natura e le sue preziose api.

The Honey Route: un viaggio dolce e sostenibile in Sudafrica

The Honey Route è un itinerario unico che intreccia apicoltura, natura e tradizioni locali, offrendo un’esperienza autentica nel cuore del Sudafrica. Attraverso paesaggi mozzafiato e comunità dedicate alla produzione sostenibile del miele, i viaggiatori scoprono il valore delle api nella conservazione ambientale e nella cultura del territorio. Ogni provincia offre mieli unici legati al suo bioma, dalle note vegetali di Limpopo ai mieli aromatici del Western Cape. Un percorso che invita a esplorare il mondo dell’apicoltura, tra degustazioni di miele artigianale, workshop e incontri con apicoltori locali, per un viaggio all’insegna della dolcezza e della sostenibilità.

New York City e le sue api: un ecosistema urbano in evoluzione

New York City è sempre più attenta alla salvaguardia delle api, grazie alla legalizzazione dell’apicoltura urbana nel 2010 e alla nascita di iniziative come l’apiario del Queens County Farm Museum, che ospita milioni di api e promuove l’educazione sulla loro importanza. Il Dipartimento dei Trasporti ha introdotto i bee hotels, offrendo rifugi agli impollinatori urbani, mentre The Bee Conservancy ha creato santuari per le api in diversi spazi pubblici. Randall’s Island Park, certificato BEE SAFE, offre habitat sicuri grazie a vaste aree fiorite prive di pesticidi. Questi progetti, sostenuti da istituzioni e cittadini, stanno trasformando New York in una città sempre più consapevole e amica delle api.

Buzz California: un viaggio speciale per celebrare il World Bee Day

In California, il World Bee Day propone esperienze immersive per conoscere il ruolo cruciale delle api nella biodiversità e nell’agricoltura. Il California Honey Festival a Woodland offre degustazioni, laboratori e musica per sensibilizzare sull’importanza delle api. In Napa Valley, Rob Keller promuove un’apicoltura rigenerativa con visite agli apiari e seminari. Al Carmel Valley Ranch, attività come A Bee’s Life permettono di esplorare da vicino gli alveari, mentre laboratori sul miele e la cera d’api offrono esperienze educative e creative. Un viaggio all’insegna della sostenibilità e della scoperta.

L’Oman e la sua antica tradizione del miele

L’apicoltura in Oman è una tradizione antica, radicata nella cultura locale e tramandata di generazione in generazione. Nei villaggi montani, gli apicoltori utilizzano metodi tradizionali per proteggere le colonie, producendo mieli pregiati come il Sidr e il Sumer, apprezzati per le loro proprietà terapeutiche e il gusto intenso, tanto da raggiungere prezzi elevati sul mercato, fino a 400 rial omaniti al chilo, circa 900 euro. Considerato un rimedio naturale, il miele viene impiegato anche in trattamenti di bellezza. Il governo sostiene il settore con programmi di formazione e ricerca, promuovendo l’apicoltura come risorsa economica e ambientale.

Le Massif: dolci esperienze al miele per i più piccoli

Le Massif di Courmayeur offre un’accoglienza speciale per le famiglie, con attività all’aria aperta e momenti di relax nella spa. I bambini possono scoprire il mondo delle api attraverso trattamenti delicati, come la maschera “Faccia d’elfo” al miele d’alpeggio, ideale per la cura della pelle. Il miele delle api della Valle d’Aosta, ricco di proprietà emollienti e nutrienti, è ideale per donare morbidezza alla pelle dei più piccoli, offrendo un concentrato di dolcezza e benessere naturale. Un soggiorno che combina divertimento e benessere in un ambiente montano suggestivo.

Giornata Internazionale delle Api: il progetto sul tetto dell’Hotel Terme Merano

L’Hotel Terme Merano unisce ospitalità e sostenibilità con un progetto di apicoltura urbana sul tetto, offrendo alle api un ambiente sicuro per contribuire alla biodiversità. Il miele prodotto viene servito a colazione e può essere acquistato dagli ospiti, sensibilizzando sull’importanza degli impollinatori e promuovendo pratiche eco-friendly. Un’iniziativa che valorizza il territorio e arricchisce l’esperienza degli ospiti.

Vienna, la capitale delle api

Vienna ospita oltre 6000 colonie di api e 700 apicoltori urbani, grazie a un ambiente favorevole ricco di parchi e fiori. La città vanta una storica tradizione apistica, con arnie collocate in luoghi simbolici come l’Università, l’Opera di Stato e la Zecca austriaca, dove si produce il miele “Oro liquido”. Il Giardino Botanico e il Bosco Viennese offrono rifugio alle api selvatiche, mentre negozi specializzati propongono miele biologico locale, confermando l’impegno di Vienna nella tutela degli impollinatori e della biodiversità.

Oggi vi porto in Uganda, con una colazione energetica e salutare a base di Amaranto, la breakfast dodo rolex.

La ricetta l’ho presa da qui, dal blog di Sophia, una foodblogger ugandese. Questo blog è stata una bella scoperta, infatti che è stato presentato su Cuisine Noir, CNN, City Press e in molte altre pubblicazioni. L’autrice ha pubblicato 3 e-book, uno dei quali ha vinto il Gourmand World Cookbook Award nel 2015. La sua missione è fotografare il cibo africano e documentare le esperienze alimentari, vuole promuovere la cucina ugandese e i prodotti del territorio.

Rolex non è il famoso orologio, come pensiamo tutti noi, ma un roll, un pratica una pane chapati farcito e arrotolato.

Il pane chapati che tutti pensiamo sia tipico dell’India è in realtà un alimento base anche Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kirghizistan, Sri Lanka, penisola arabica, Africa orientale e Caraibi.

L’autrice del blog pensa che il Rolex dovrebbe essere soprannominato il cibo ufficiale dell’Uganda perché è conosciuto in tutto il paese, è relativamente facile da preparare ed ideale da proporre come colazione, pranzo e cena.

Questi abbinamenti sono stati decisi al momento dall’autrice, questo Rolex è una miscela perfetta di sapori dolci, acidi, salati, cremosi e di nocciola.

Mio figlio ha apprezzato particolarmente, una bella ricetta che terrò presente anche per una cena veloce!

Ingredienti per 2

1 Chapati

2 cucchiai di amaranto, cotto a vapore

1 carota, affettata sottilmente

1 cipolla in agrodolce (io 2 cipolline borettane)

1 avocado, sbucciato e affettato

1 uovo

1 cucchiaio di latte intero

1 cucchiaio di semi di sesamo tostati

Sale

Olio evo

Cuocere l’amaranto, IN acqua bollente salata aggiungere i semi di amaranto e far cuocere per 30 minuti circa, spegnere e attendere 10 minuti, poi scolare.

Affettate sottilmente la carota a filetti e la cipolla. Pelare l’avocado e tagliarlo a tocchetti.

Rompere l’uovo in una ciotola, aggiungere il latte intero, sale e frullare il tutto. In una padella calda, scaldare un poco di olio versare l’uovo sbattuto e fare una frittatina, cuocere per un paio di minuti. Lasciare raffreddare e tagliare a listarelle sottili.

Mettere un chapati su un piatto, disporre la fetta di avocado, la frittata di uova, le cipolle, le carote e l’amaranto cotto. Cospargere con i semi di sesamo e arrotolare saldamente il chapati.

Eccolo prima di arrotolarlo

Tagliare in due e accompagnarlo con una tazza di tè.

This year’s CMS Africa Summit was my third attendance at this amazing conference. My colleagues Marjorie, Sarah, Hannah, and Luminus joined me for the event and in doing so we sent Automatticians from three different continents.

Democratizing eCommerce

For several years now, Automattic has been the title sponsor for CMS Africa Summit. After conferences in Kenya (2015) and Uganda (2016), the 2017 edition took place in Abuja, Nigeria. The team behind the summit consists of industry leaders from all three of those countries. Together they also represent some of the world’s most popular open source content management systems (CMSs): Joomla, Drupal, and (of course) WordPress.

As one of the tech hubs in Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria is leading tech innovation on the continent. The conference by consequence focused on the practical use of CMSs, more so than in previous years: how they can boost local businesses and grow the economy.

For that reason, the attendees were very interested in eCommerce as a way to take their startups online. We introduced them to WooCommerce as an open source tool for economic empowerment, and shared practical and localized guidelines. Many of the entrepreneurs we encountered expressed their love for open source software because it doesn’t require them to invest their precious startup budget in software.

Presence

The slides and summaries of our talks can be found on our respective websites. Here’s a selection of some of the other talks we loved. Prosper Otemuyiwa, our favorite keynote speaker, focused on how to build a product the open source way. Nigerian CMS organizer Adedayo Adeniyi talked about the need for online growth in Nigeria and putting checks and balances in place for high-quality local web development. Software developer Idris Abdul Azeez highlighted the importance of documenting not only software configuration but also its development process, since writing readable code is a necessary cornerstone for the open source community and facilitates members’ contributions.

We were moved when lead organizer Oduor Jagero shared his excitement that Automattic had sent a team of staff to attend, present workshops, and connect in person with the Nigerian tech and open source community. Beyond the financial support, taking the time to teach and to listen to the local stories is especially appreciated. If you’re ready to listen too, here’s a great place to start: Jagero asked his friends on Facebook to share their blog posts about love. Three of the best stories will be awarded a basket of WordPress goodies. Here are the best ones he selected: Lovine Mboya, Akello, and Nepenthe.

CMS Africa Summit 2017 was amazing, just as in previous years. As outsiders, the local community welcomed us with open arms. The eagerness to learn, grow, and be successful was inspiring. On to the next one!

Automatticians, the people who build WordPress.com, participate in events and projects around the world every day. Periodically, they report back on the exciting things they do when not in front of a computer.

Today I share my experiences meeting and getting to know some of the most active members of the open source community in East Africa during the CMS Africa Summit, held in Kampala, Uganda, earlier this month. I was joined by my colleagues Job Thomas, Konstantin Obenland, Matty Cohen, Deborah Beckett, and Gareth Allison.

CMS Africa Summit, where Automattic was a title sponsor, celebrates not only WordPress but open source software in general. The two-day event featured a jam-packed agenda of workshops, breakout sessions, keynotes, and even a hackathon, all targeting the fast-growing community of developers, business owners, startup founders, and bloggers in East Africa. Speakers from around the continent (and beyond) shared their expertise on building a business based on open source software and contributing to the community, to name just two topics.

My colleagues and I offered workshops on launching an eCommerce site and using Jetpack to expand WordPress’ functionality. Job, Konstantin, and Gareth gave a joint keynote presentation on contributing to the WordPress project, while I offered tips on marketing a business both offline and online, based on my personal experiences running a successful startup for several years.

It was the most fun conference I’ve ever attended. How many tech events have you ever been to that included a giant “cash box,” a tattoo competition, or, inexplicably, an enormous, glowing white orb dotted with the iconic W logo? My favorite part of the entire event was running into a young attendee in the women’s bathroom — she was applying what appeared to be a couple dozen of the temporary WordPress tattoos we’d brought along as swag giveaways. None of us were surprised when we learned that she ultimately won the competition. Clearly, the love for WordPress (and WordPress swag) runs deep here.

What we took away from the event, however, were the astounding energy, drive, talent, and intelligence that we witnessed during those remarkable two days, and the thirst we observed for open source software and what it can do to transform communities. Africa’s technology sector is booming, and we’re excited to have met many of its most passionate and inspiring pioneers.
