E’ stato ideato nel 2020 da Marina Nissim, Presidente di Fondazione Elpis, come reazione alla pandemia, per dare un segnale di incoraggiamento e creare nuove opportunità di espressione per artisti emergenti e affermati. L’iniziativa coinvolge borghi con meno di 5mila abitanti, situati in aree diverse del territorio italiano, con l’obiettivo di valorizzare l’intero territorio italiano e ri-scoprire il patrimonio storico e paesaggistico di piccoli centri, lontani dai circuiti tradizionali dell’arte e del turismo. Un altro degli obiettivi della manifestazione è quello di rivolgersi a un pubblico sempre più ampio e trasversale, anche grazie al coinvolgimento delle comunità e alle relazioni che si generano tra artista, abitanti, amministrazioni, associazioni, commercianti e artigiani locali.

Ad oggi sono stati coinvolti 80 comuni e 80 artisti, insieme a sponsor tecnici, associazioni locali e persone che a vario titolo hanno partecipato alla realizzazione di questa grande mostra nazionale collettiva. Una rete di relazioni e partecipazioni che diventa ogni anno più ampia. Inoltre, ad ogni edizione, sempre più borghi si candidano per partecipare a Una Boccata d’Arte e negli ultimi tre anni, grazie alle acquisizioni delle amministrazioni e alle donazioni degli artisti, ben venti installazioni sono diventate permanenti.
