Le camere sono un po’ piccole ma pulite, silenziose e ordinate, dotate di bagno privato, Wi-Fi, TV e frigobar.

Tour dell’Irlanda del Nord

Giorno 1: Temple Bar

Il nostro primo giorno a Dublino comincia a stomaco vuoto: non avendo pagato la colazione in hotel, su consiglio del concierge ci siamo recati da The Bakehouse, un locale famoso per i pancake, sia dolci che salati.

Dall’hotel, attraversiamo l’Ha’ penny bridge, il “ponte del mezzo penny”, così chiamato perché anticamente era necessario pagare il pedaggio per poterlo attraversare, e ci accomodiamo da The Bakehouse.

Il locale è carino, accogliente, ben arredato.

Con circa 10€ a testa facciamo colazione con una porzione di pancake a testa (io con la frutta, il mio compagno con bacon e uova) e 2 caffè large. Ottimo!

A pancia piena torniamo a Temple Bar, il centro nevralgico del divertimento irlandese, affollato da artisti di strada, musicisti e tantissimi pedoni, pub, ristoranti e caffetterie.

Superiamo il Millenium Bridge (inaugurato nel 2000) e arriviamo a Essex Gate, l’antica porta della città, dove vediamo i resti dell’ Isolde’s Tower.

Arriviamo alla Christ Church Cathedral, la prima chiesa cristiana la città nel cui parco ci sono i resti di un antico convento medievale.

Ci fermiamo da Dublinia, un centro espositivo a pagamento (il biglietto costa 8€) dove è ripercorsa la storia di Dublino, dall’arrivo dei normanni.

Decidiamo di non visitare Dublinia e facciamo rotta al Castello, in Dame Street.

Il Castello è stato la dimora della Signoria dei Normanni dal 1171 fino al 1541; successivamente ha ospitato il Regno d’Irlanda e infine il Parlamento irlandese.

Il biglietto costa 4,50€ e la parte più affascinante della visita è stata la torretta circolare, conosciuta come Record Tower, l’unico edificio rimasto dalle fortezza normanna risalente al XIII secolo.

Dopo la visita, passiamo davanti la Chester Betty Library, una collezione di opere donate alla città dal magnate irlandese Chester Betty, e arriviamo alla Cattedrale di San Patrick, la chiesa con il campanile più alto della città (85 metri).

Ci fermiamo a prendere due caffè da Starbuck’s e li sorseggiamo seduti su una panchina del parco San Patrick.

Nel pomeriggio andiamo al Trinity College, la più prestigiosa università del Paese,fondata nel 1592 da Elisabetta I.

Il Trinity ha ospitato menti eccelse, come Jonathan Swift, autore dei “Viaggi di Gulliver”, Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, l’autore di “Dracula” e il premio Nobel Samuel Beckett.

La Old Library e la Long Room raccolgono  250 mila volumi antichi.

Il libro più prezioso – da non perdere – è il Book of Kells, un manoscritto miniato dei quattro Vangeli scritto in latino.

Molto probabilmente il libro fu realizzato nei primi anni del IX secoli dai monaci scozzesi di Iona.

Dopo l’arrivo dei vichinghi, i monaci  si trasferirono nel monastero di Kells, dove il libro fu ritrovato nel 1661.

L’ingresso al Trinity College è gratuito ma la visita alla Old Library costa 10€.

Essendo quasi ora di cena, ci fermiamo in un pub vicino la Statua di Molly Malone, l’affascinante prostituta e pescivendola morta a causa di una febbre, il cui fantasma pare si aggiri tra i vicoli della città, nelle notti nebbiose.

Il pub si chiama O’Neills, un tipico locale irlandese con birre ottime, buon cibo e prezzi medi (il main course costa 11-14€).

Noi prendiamo 2 birre Guinness, uno stufato irlandese e un arrosto di cosciotto di agnello spendendo circa 20€ a testa.

Perfetto per passare una tipica serata irlandese!

Giorno 2: Abbey Theatre, shopping e Irish coffee

Iniziamo il nostro secondo giorno irlandese con una colazione da Caffè Nero a base di caffè americano e muffin con gocce di cioccolato, una vera delizia.

La nostra prima meta è l’ Abbey Theatre, il teatro ufficiale di Dublino, fondato nel 1903 da William Butter Yeats e Lady Augusta Gregory.

Il teatro propone tutt’oggi una programmazione degna di nota, con artisti del calibro di Tom Mac Intyre, Tom Murphy, Mark O’Rowe, Billy Roche e Sam Shepard.

Proseguendo lungo O’Connell Street, arriviamo all’incrocio con Earl Street, dove scattiamo qualche foto alla statua di bronzo di James Joyce, l’autore di Dubliners e L’Ulisse, due capolavori della letteratura irlandese.

Continuiamo a passeggiare su Parnell Street e arriviamo al Museo degli scrittori di Dublino, che raccoglie la storia della letteratura irlandese con ritratti, manoscritti, lettere e oggetti personali dei letterati che hanno fatto di Dublino il centro della loro produzione culturale.

L’ingresso  al museo è a pagamento (7,50€).

I pezzi imperdibili sono il manoscritto “On the Strand Howth” di Patrick Pearse, la macchina da scrivere Remington di Patrick Kavanagh, il vecchio telefono nero di Samuel Beckett, il piano di James Joyce, due esemplari di Ulysse pubblicati a Parigi nel 1930, la edizione di Dracula, di Bram Stoker, pubblicato nel 1897.

Ci fermiamo per pranzo da Superfood Takeaway, un piccolo fasti food all’interno del Moore Street Mall, perfetto per gli amanti del buon cibo fresco e genuino.

Nel pomeriggio ci dedichiamo allo shopping nel quadrilatero compreso tra Parnell Street, Henry Street, Mary Street e Capel Street.

Per cena ci rechiamo al pub The Temple Bar, uno dei più antichi della città, famoso per preparare il migliore Irish Coffee di Dublino.

I prezzi sono leggermente sopra la media (circa 30€ a testa per 2 piatti di sandwich grandi, due birre piccole e due Irish coffee buonissimi) ma non si può lasciare Dublino senza essere passati dal Temple Bar!

Giorno 3: scogliere di Moher, baia di Galway, costa del Burren

Il terzo giorno ci immergiamo nella natura irlandese con una visita guidata alle scogliere di Moher, un posto fantastico nonché location del film “Harry Potter e il principe mezzosangue”.

Il tour, pagato 50€ a testa, dura tutta la giornata e comprende il viaggio in bus attraverso le contea di Clare, Kildare e Limerick, l’ingresso al centro visitatori  Atlantic Edge alle Scogliere di Moher, la visita della città medievale di Galway e al Burren National Park.

Passeggiare lungo le scogliere e sentire l’aria fredda dell’oceano che ti sferza il viso è una sensazione magica e indescrivibile..

un panorama mozzafiato.. uno spettacolo della natura incredibile… le scogliere altissime che cadono a strapiombo nell’oceano..

le onde che si infrangono sugli scogli con tutta la loro forza…

Galway  è una città medievale descritta dal poeta Yeats come “la Venezia dell’Ovest”.

Nel tempo libero a disposizione, ne approfittiamo per passeggiare lungo le stradine del centro storico: William Street e Shop Street pullulano di botteghe pittoresche e artisti di strada.

Cross Street è la via dei pub e delle caffetterie, dove ci fermiamo per un Irish coffee.

Torniamo a Dublino poco prima delle 7 e, avendo voglia di assaggiare la mitica Guinness cake, ci fermiamo da Queen of Tarts, una delle migliori pasticcerie della città e ne prendiamo due porzioni take away, da mangiare in hotel.

La torta è soffice, cioccolatosa, ricoperta di panna.. un vero peccato di gola!

Per cena ci fermiamo da The Quays, un tipico pub a Temple Bar con musica dal vivo e ottime pie!!

Giorno 4: Castello di Malahide e Guinness Storehouse

Soddisfatti della torta acquistata la sera precedente, cominciamo la giornata con una colazione da Queen of Tarts.

Il mio compagno  sceglie la Irish breakfast (un piatto con salsicce, bacon, patate, uova, pomodori e toast), mentre io un paio di scones ai mirtilli e un pot con yogurt, frutta e granola.

Tutto buonissimo, locale carino e servizio impeccabile.

Sazi, andiamo su Lower Abbey Street e prendiamo il bus 42 in direzione Talbot Street fino a Malahide, un pittoresco paesino costiero nella zona di Fingal.

Il tragitto dura circa 30 minuti.

NOnostante lo sviluppo economico, Malahide conserva tuttora l’atmosfera del villaggio di una volta: i portoni colorati, i cesti di fiori appesi alle insegne dei negozi, le stradine acciottolate, le botteghe di artigianato, ecc

Cio’ che rende famoso questo paese, è il Castello, uno dei più antichi della regione, residenza della famiglia dei Talbot fino al 1976.

L’ingresso al Castello costa 12,50€ ma noi, non essendo interessati, prendiamo il bus 42 e torniamo in città.

Ci fermiamo per un caffè da Starbucks poi andiamo al Guinness Storehouse.

Il biglietto per la visita al museo costa 18€ ma, prenotandolo online, pagherete 14€… un bel risparmio!

La storica fabbrica della birra è articolata su 7 piani in cui viene spiegata la lavorazione della birra, la storia del marchio, e viene data la possibilità di bere birre Guinness in tutte le varianti.

La parte cool? Il Gravity Bar all’ultimo piano, che regala una vista bellissima su Dublino.

Eccezionale!!

Non essendo particolarmente stanchi, arriviamo a piedi alla Statua di Molly Malone e ci tuffiamo nel fiume di gente che affolla la via dello shopping per eccellenza della città: Grafton Street.

Il cuore pulsante di Dublino, pieno di negozi tipici, caffetterie, artisti di strada che animano la città.

Entusiasti da una simile atmosfera, decidiamo di cenare nei dintorni e ci fermiamo da Bunsen, un fast food piccolissimo con un menu composto da 4 tipi di hamburger e 3 di patate.

Per 10€ a testa mangiamo un hamburger succulento e cotto alla perfezione accompagnato  da patatine fritte sticky, ketchup e maionese. Super consigliato!

Giorno 5: Belfast e Selciato del Gigante

Entusiasti dalle recensioni positive lette su Tripadvisor, andiamo a fare colazione da Lemon Jelly Cafe’, un piccolo locale molto carino e ben arredato sito lungo Millennium Bank.

Prendiamo la Irish breakfast (buona e abbondante), uno yogurt con mirtilli, un caffè e un succo, spendendo in totale circa15€. Perfetto!

Partiamo quindi per la gita in pullman diretti a Belfast e al Selciato del Gigante (costo gita 50€ a testa).

Arriviamo a Belfast, la capitale dell’ Irlanda del Nord e abbiamo 1 ora di tempo libero

Noi prendiamo due caffe e andiamo a gustarli al Parco inaugurato il 15 aprile 2012, in occasione del centenario dell’affondamento del Titanic.

Nel Parco ci sono 5 placche di bronzo con i nomi di tutte le 1.512 vittime del naufragio.

La commemorazione al Titanic è giustificata dal fatto che il transatlantico fu costruito nei cantieri navali di Belfast.

Usciti dal Parco, scattiamo qualche foto al Municipio, quindi raggiungiamo la guida e i nostri compagni di viaggio per andare alla scoperta del romantico viale degli alberi di faggio intrecciati, noto come “Dark Hedges“, piantati dalla famiglia Stuart nel XVIII secolo, usati anche nella serie “Il Trono di Spade”.

Proseguiamo poi per il Castello di Dunluce, che si narra abbia ispirato le “Cronache di Narnia” di C.S. Lewis.

Il tour continua con la visita al Selciato del Gigante, formato da circa 40.000 colonne basaltiche incastrate tra loro, considerate come “l’Ottava Meraviglia del Mondo”.

La leggenda narra che il guerriero gigante dell’Ulster Fionn Mc Cumhaill si fosse innamorato perdutamente di una gigantessa scozzese dell’isola di Staffa e per raggiungerla avesse costruito con le sue possenti mani una strada di pietra per poterla corteggiare ogni giorno.

Una meraviglia di Madre Natura … un’atmosfera leggendaria che regna  in un luogo da sogno…

Trascorriamo qualche momento al ponte di corda Carrick-a-Rede, lungo 18 metri e sospeso a 25 metri sopra il mare.

Fin dal 1784, il ponte collega la terraferma con un’isola rocciosa, una riserva di pesca del salmone.

L’attraversamento del ponte è un’esperienza unica, sospesi tra cielo e mare… un concentrato di adrenalina che dimenticherete difficilmente…

Dal ponte scorgiamo l’isola Rathlin verso la Scozia.

Concludiamo la visita a Cushendun, un piccolo villaggio a strapiombo sul mare, il punto più vicino tra l’Irlanda e la Scozia.

Torniamo a Dublino prima di cena e trascorriamo la nostra ultima serata irlandese da Lemon and duke, vicino Grafton Street.

Il locale e’ accogliente, ben arredato, con tavoli a lume di candela, servizio rapido, piatti buoni e abbondanti, prezzi medi.

Piatti consigliati: hamburger di manzo della casa e fudge al cioccolato bianco.
