Tra marzo e luglio, siamo testimoni di un evento straordinario che si ripete da ere geologiche: il ritorno della vita che anima le fronde dei nostri alberi e i piccoli anfratti dei nostri balconi.

In questo periodo, il il paesaggio italiano si trasforma in un immenso cantiere a cielo aperto, dove piccoli architetti alati danno forma a strutture di incredibile complessità per accogliere la loro prole.

Proteggere i nidi degli uccelli selvatici in giardino( o sul  terrazzo) non è solo sensibilità nei confronti degli animali e della biodiversità, ma un dovere morale e civile sancito dalla Legge 157/1992, che tutela rigorosamente tali fragili dimore, le uova e i piccoli volatili.

Un ecosistema fragile nel cuore del giardino

Osservando con attenzione, possiamo renderci conto che gli uccelli non cercano un luogo qualunque in cui nidificare, ma selezionano con cura zone poco frequentate e che appaiono loro sicure.

Tuttavia, la nostra curiosità e/o la gestione troppo zelante dello spazio verde possono diventare involontariamente minacce concrete per la sopravvivenza di specie, come merli, passeri o cinciallegre, che percepiscono la presenza umana come quella di un potenziale predatore.

La regola d’oro: l’osservazione senza disturbo

Il miglior aiuto che possiamo offrire alla natura è, paradossalmente, l’astensione da ogni azione diretta.

Se un nido si trova vicino a zone frequentate, come un porticato o un’area barbecue, è fondamentale mantenere le distanze, poiché sostare troppo a lungo nelle vicinanze può rendere i genitori pennuti nervosi al punto da non tornare più per nutrire i piccoli o covare le uova.

Non spostare mai un nido per “metterlo al sicuro”: gli uccelli non lo riconoscerebbero e interpreterebbero il trasferimento come l’attacco di un predatore.

Quando l’osservazione è concessa: frequenza e orari

Per chi desidera monitorare la nidificazione (magari per scopi di ricerca o semplice passione), esistono protocolli precisi per minimizzare il disturbo:

• Frequenza limitata: è opportuno avvicinarsi al nido non più di 2 volte alla settimana.
• Il fattore tempo: ogni visita deve durare meno di 1 minuto.
• Tecnica di approccio: avvicinati ogni volta da un’angolazione diversa per non creare un sentiero visibile ai predatori più intelligenti, come corvi, gazze o ghiandaie.
• L’orario ideale: effettua i controlli nel pomeriggio ed evitate assolutamente le ore del mattino, quando le uova hanno bisogno di calore costante, e i giorni di pioggia o di freddo intenso.

Tecnologia al servizio dell’ornitologia

Oggi la tecnologia ci permette di essere testimoni oculari senza interferire, grazie all’uso di Wi-Fi camera resistenti alle intemperie e sensori di movimento, che consentono di studiare il comportamento degli uccelli direttamente dallo smartphone.

Inoltre, l’utilizzo di app come Ornitho, eBird o iNaturalist permette a chiunque di contribuire alla “Citizen Science”, segnalando le nidificazioni e aiutando gli studiosi a monitorare lo stato di salute delle specie urbane.

Progettare un habitat di sostentamento e sicurezza

Un giardino che voglia definirsi eco-friendly deve allontanarsi dai canoni estetici dei “deserti ecologici” fatti di piante esotiche e ghiaia.

L’imperativo di non potare

La vegetazione fitta è la prima linea di difesa di un nido, proprio come l’erba alta lo è per le api ed altri impollinatori.

È cruciale sospendere ogni operazione di potatura di siepi e alberi almeno fino ad agosto inoltrato, dato che tagliare i rami significa privare il nido del suo mimetismo naturale, lasciando i nidiacei alla mercé delle intemperie e dei predatori.

Architetture Artificiali e flora autoctona

Se scegli di installare casette nido, privilegia il legno naturale (pino o abete) con pareti spesse per l’isolamento termico, evitando plastica o metalli, che causano la formazione di condensa, si surriscaldano in estate e non difendono dal gelo in inverno.

Posizionale ad un’altezza di circa 2-3 metri, orientando il foro d’ingresso (che deve trovarsi ad almeno 17 centimetri dal fondo per impedire ai predatori di “pescare” i piccoli dall’esterno) verso est o sud-est per proteggerle dai venti dominanti e dal sole cocente.

Arricchisci il giardino con piante locali come il biancospino, il prugnolo o il sambuco (con i cui fiori si può fare un ottimo sciroppo curativo), che offrono contemporaneamente protezione spinosa e cibo naturale.

La sfida della convivenza con i predatori domestici

I gatti domestici, anche se ben nutriti, conservano un istinto predatorio millenario che in Italia causa la perdita di milioni di volatili ogni anno.

Pertanto, durante la fase critica dell’involo dei pulcini, che avviene solitamente tra maggio e luglio, sarebbe opportuno limitare le uscite dei gatti, specialmente nelle ore dell’alba e del tramonto, quando l’attività degli uccelli è massima.

Mentre applicare delle “cinture” o collari protettivi in metallo o plastica attorno ai tronchi degli alberi può impedire fisicamente ai felini di arrampicarsi fino ai nidi, mettere campanellini al collo dei gatti è una soluzione quasi sempre inefficace nel proteggere i nidiacei che ancora non sanno volare.

Il momento del soccorso: quando intervenire?

Poiché capita spesso di imbattersi in un uccellino a terra, è bene sapere a priori come comportarsi in tale frangente.

Se il piccolo è piumato, vigile e saltella, si tratta di un fledgling (giovane svezzato) che sta imparando a conoscere il mondo: i genitori sono sicuramente vicini e lo stanno nutrendo.

Perciò, raccoglierlo significherebbe sottrarlo alle loro cure.

Se, invece, trovi un nidiaceo (pullo) nudo o con pochissime piume e ancora incapace di reggersi sulle zampette, ricollocalo nel nido o, se ti è impossibile farlo, mettilo in una scatola di cartone poco più grande dell’animale foderata alla base con fogli di giornale e forata per consentire l’aerazione (mai in gabbie metalliche che potrebbero ferirlo).

Poi portalo immediatamente a un Centro di Recupero Fauna Selvatica (CRAS) o contatta la Lega Italiana Protezione Uccelli (Lipu) al numero telefonico 0521/273043 o la tua Amministrazione regionale di riferimento per avere istruzioni sul da farsi.

Un caso unico è rappresentato dai rondoni, uccelli dalle ali lunghissime e dalle zampe cortissime che impediscono loro di decollare dal suolo autonomamente.

Un rondone adulto a terra è sempre in difficoltà e necessita di essere aiutato a riprendere il volo, sollevandolo delicatamente con le mani in uno spazio aperto.

Tieni sempre presente che ogni piccolo volo che prende quota dal tuo giardino è un successo collettivo e che rispettare e proteggere i nidi degli uccelli significa preservare la biodiversità e fare di uno spazio verde un palcoscenico in cui la vita continua a trionfare.

Non per forza bisogna usare un total white, che ricorda più una stanza d’ospedale che una camera da letto.
