Rhythm è la prima mostra fotografica personale in Germania del fotografo d’arte Bastiaan Woudt. Nato nel 1987 nei Paesi Bassi, è conosciuto per i suoi ritratti iconici, caratterizzati da forti contrasti e da una distintività monocromatica che, nell’arco di soli 13 anni, lo hanno fatto conoscere a livello internazionale. Ispirato dai maestri della fotografia del XX secolo, come Irving Penn e Richard Avedon, Bastiaan Woudt combina la loro tradizione di fotografia classica con elementi innovativi e contemporanei, che catturano l’occhio con la loro chiarezza e raffinatezza. Ha iniziato la sua carriera come fotografo autodidatta ed è rapidamente diventato un maestro nell’uso della luce e dell’ombra. Le sue opere si distinguono per un‘estetica inconfondibile, segnata da influenze minimaliste e surreali. Questa affascinante combinazione conferisce ai suoi ritratti scultorei un inconfondibile valore di riconoscimento.

Le sue opere d’arte sono regolarmente esposte in famose gallerie, fiere d’arte internazionali e nelle principali case d’asta e riscuotono un grande successo. Nel suo attuale progetto “Echo from Beyond”, Woudt esplora i confini dell’arte e della fotografia e si occupa intensamente del ruolo dell’intelligenza artificiale nell’arte, interessandosi principalmente alla relazione simbiotica tra la creatività umana e l’apprendimento automatico. Fondendo le sue fotografie con le possibilità dell’intelligenza artificiale, vengono create opere a tecnica mista che mostrano immagini precedentemente inimmaginabili e creano un linguaggio visivo unico, che va oltre la fotografia tradizionale e apre una finestra su un mondo di nuove possibilità e scoperte. Alcuni di questi pezzi unici sono presentati per la prima volta nella mostra Rhythm.

Helmut Newton Foundation celebra i 20 anni di attività con la mostra Berlin, Berlin!

Helmut Newton Foundation celebra i 20 anni di attività a Berlino con una mostra speciale collettiva: Berlin, Berlin! e contemporaneamente rende omaggio alla città in cui Newton è nato. Helmut Newton istituì la fondazione nell’autunno del 2003 a Berlino per ospitare parte del suo archivio, che fu aperta al pubblico nel giugno 2004 nello storico ex Landwehrkasino accanto alla stazione Zoologischer Garten. Un luogo simbolico, perché fu proprio qui che Helmut Neustädter (vero nome del fotografo), sotto la costante minaccia di deportazione in quanto ebreo, fuggì da Berlino all’inizio di dicembre del 1938, per tornare 65 anni dopo come il fotografo di fama mondiale che tutti conosciamo. Da allora, la Helmut Newton Foundation e la Biblioteca d’Arte di Berlino risiedono insieme nell’edificio storico oggi noto come Museo della Fotografia. Dopo la morte di June, moglie di Newton (nota anche come Alice Springs) nell’aprile 2021, l’intera collezione di opere di Helmut Newton e Alice Springs, insieme a tutti i materiali d’archivio, è ospitata nell’archivio della fondazione.

Dal 1936 al 1938 Helmut Newton si formò con la leggendaria fotografa Yva a Berlino-Charlottenburg, per poi farsi strada nei tre generi che lo hanno reso famoso in tutto il mondo: moda, ritratto e nudo. Dopo aver lavorato a Singapore e Melbourne, la carriera di Newton decollò a Parigi nei primi anni ’60, periodo durante il quale tornò spesso a Berlino per servizi fotografici di moda su riviste come Constanze, Adam e Vogue Europe. Nella mostra si possono ammirare le modelle di Newton che posano alla Porta di Brandeburgo prima della costruzione del Muro di Berlino nel 1961.

Nel 1963 produsse Mata Hari Spy Story, una serie di moda con Brigitte Schilling incentrata sul Muro di Berlino, suscitando molto scalpore. Nel 1979, la rivista tedesca Vogue, appena rilanciata, incaricò Newton di ripercorrere la sua infanzia e giovinezza a Berlino Ovest, visualizzando le tendenze della moda del momento. Il risultato fu un portfolio di più pagine intitolato Berlino, Berlino!, che ha ispirato il nome di questa mostra anniversario. Tra le sue collaborazioni successive: Condé Nast Traveler (1987), Zeit magazine (1990), Männer Vogue (1991) e Süddeutsche Zeitung magazine (2001).

Il Muro di Berlino emerge come motivo ricorrente in tutta la mostra. Dodici fogli di fotografie trovate dalle guardie di frontiera della Germania Est, curate e commentate da Arwed Messmer e Annett Gröschner, offrono uno sguardo dettagliato sul Muro a metà degli anni ’60. E riemerge anche in altre immagini, che riflettono la città divisa al di là di luoghi famosi come la Porta di Brandeburgo o il Reichstag, catturando collettivamente il mito di Berlino e la sua rappresentazione. La mostra promuove un dialogo coinvolgente tra progetti influenti che hanno segnato la storia della fotografia e del cinema: la serie Inter Esse di Maria Sewcz è accostata alla Waffenruhe di Michael Schmidt e ai fotogrammi del film Wim Wenders Wings of Desire. In particolare, tutte queste opere risalgono alla fine degli anni Ottanta, prima della caduta del Muro di Berlino.

Le altre sale espositive ricontestualizzano le immagini iconiche e meno conosciute di Newton della Berlino dagli anni ’30 agli anni 2000, attraverso un centinaio fotografie, tra cui anche quelle di colleghi fotografi e registi. La mostra presenta opere di Helmut Newton, Yevgeny Chaldei, Arno Fischer, Thomas Florschuetz, Will McBride, Hein Gorny, Barbara Klemm, F.C. Gundlach, Harf Zimmermann, Arwed Messmer/Annett Gröschner, Michael Schmidt, Maria Sewcz, Wim Wenders, Ulrich Wüst, Yva, Günter Zint al Museum für Fotografie (Museo della Fotografia). La mostra è completata da una pubblicazione TASCHEN sulla fotografia berlinese di Helmut Newton.

Parallelamente alla mostra Hollywood, aperta il 3 giugno 2022, il 2 settembre è stata inaugurata nella Project Room, all’Helmut Newton Foundation, Magnum Photos. The Misfits. La mostra si riferisce all’epoca delle grandi produzioni cinematografiche, nella fattispecie all’omonimo film girato a Reno in Nevada, sceneggiato da Arthur Miller, diretto da John Huston e interpretato da un cast stellare: Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift ed Eli Wallach. Una combinazione di attori di altissimo calibro, unica nel suo genere.

Le foto sono dei fotografi: Eve Arnold, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Cornell Capa, Elliott Erwitt, Ernst Haas, Inge Morath, Dennis Stock, Erich Hartmann. Un who’s who della storia della fotografia di quel periodo. Nelle fotografie esposte troviamo Marilyn mentre si concentra sulle sue battute in uno scatto di Inge Morath, Montgomery Clift seduto nella parte posteriore di un’auto, fotografato da Dennis Stock, e la famosa foto di gruppo con gli attori e le attrici affiancati dal regista e dallo sceneggiatore, eseguita da Elliott Erwitt.

I membri della Magnum ci rendono testimoni postumi della realizzazione di un classico di Hollywood, pur rimanendo quasi invisibili durante il loro lavoro. Questo segna un passaggio dalle foto d’altri tempi delle star cinematografiche in scena, realizzate per conto dei maggiori studios, che ritroviamo nella mostra Hollywood al piano superiore del museo, e uno sviluppo decisivo nel visualizzazione del cinema. Alcune delle immagini di The Misfits di Inge Morath ed Eve Arnold sono esposte anche nella parte principale della mostra, accanto alle fotografie di scena di Steve Schapiro, relative al film della metà degli anni ‘70 Chinatown di Roman Polanski. In un certo senso, costituiscono un trait d’union alle quasi 50 immagini in bianco e nero della Project Room al piano terra del museo.

Con la mostra principale al piano superiore, si ripercorrono i circa 100 anni di Hollywood: dai primi ritratti delle star degli anni ’20 e ’30, realizzati da Ruth Harriet Louise e George Hurrell, alla Hollywood contemporanea, tra cui i ritratti di Anton Corbijn. Con The Misfits, la Fondazione Helmut Newton festeggia il 75° anniversario dell’agenzia fotografica Magnum Photos. Inoltre è uno degli eventi di apertura della BERLIN PHOTO WEEK 2022 che si svolgerà dal 2 al 9 settembre nella città tedesca.

Hollywood non è solo un mito, ma anche un marchio, da decenni una macchina da sogno senza precedenti, e non solo quando in primavera vengono assegnati gli Oscar. Più di cento anni fa, dal 1917, l’Ufa, Universum-Film AG, casa di produzione e di distribuzione tedesca di Berlino divenne il punto di riferimento dell’azienda cinematografica in Germania.

Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, lo stesso avvenne per Cinecittà a Roma, che fungeva da luogo di produzione cinematografica per grandi colossal italiani e stranieri. Attorno a questi festival sono nati premi cinematografici importanti: Orsi d’oro e d’argento, Palme e Leoni, a seconda della città. Anche la Berlinale è frequentata da numerose celebrities di Hollywood.

Nel 2003 la direzione della Berlinale ha incaricato il fotografo Gerhard Kassner di fotografare ufficialmente attori, registi, giurati, produttori, e altri importanti personaggi del mondo del cinema. Per quasi 20 anni, Kassner ha scattato ritratti delle stars di Hollywood in un piccolo studio improvvisato. Aveva solo pochi minuti per ogni scatto, prima che i vip si spostassero per conferenze stampa e photocall varie. Rispetto ai classici scatti fatti durante gli eventi e sul red carpet, i ritratti di Kassner rivelano un senso di intimità ed empatia con il soggetto. Il viso è l’espressione dell’individualità di ciascuna persona quanto i suoi gesti, che sono usati con parsimonia, ma in modo mirato.

Gerhard Kassner ha abbattuto i grandi spazi illusori che il cinema generalmente crea, per un immediato e diretto contatto umano. In alcune immagini, riesce anche a condurci dietro la facciata del professionista, trasformando coloro che spesso sembrano inavvicinabili in persone umane.
