Si tratta di particolari ritratti realizzati in acrilico su tela di animali colti in atteggiamenti o situazioni che fanno emergere le loro peculiarità fisiche e caratteriali. Tra i soggetti rappresentati si trovano alcune specie piuttosto conosciute, come la zebra, il leone, la civetta e il lupo, ma anche altre più rare e minacciate, come la tigre siberiana, il panda gigante e il leopardo delle nevi. I soggetti vengono isolati e colti in tutta la loro magnificenza e unicità attraverso lo strumento pittorico e analizzati nei minimi dettagli con uno sguardo fotografico.

Accanto a queste opere, sono esposti alcuni ritratti realizzati in quattro monocromi (blu, verde, terra e rosso), che alludono a elementi ricorrenti in natura e uniscono simbolicamente tutte le opere in mostra come parte dello stesso habitat naturale. Gli animali ritratti escono dunque dalla visione di uno scatto fotografico nella dimensione astratta e concettuale della pittura contemporanea, dove ciò che si vede non è mai solo quello che si vede, e si entra così in un percorso naturalistico immersivo che porta il visitatore a conoscere i segreti e i valori del mondo naturale, mostrato attraverso le opere pittoriche e lo sguardo analitico di Marco Grasso.

“I suoi dipinti descrivono nei minimi dettagli la “pelle” – per usare il termine in senso ampio ad indicare l’esterno, la superficie dei corpi – di animali selvaggi. Pellicce, piume, squame, carapaci sono indagati con il suo pennello in modo estremamente dettagliato, con una precisione tale da rendere quasi tattile la superficie dipinta.” spiega la curatrice Elena Di Raddo e prosegue “Il naturalismo di Marco Grasso non è però da intendersi nel senso ottocentesco del termine, ma si tratta di una pittura che ha quale obiettivo la descrizione delle caratteristiche di corpi degli animali, fino a raggiungerne anche gli aspetti del loro carattere. Allo stesso tempo l’arte di Marco Grasso ha anche lo scopo di valorizzare la natura animale in tutti i suoi aspetti locali e globali. Per lui, come per tutti gli artisti dell’Artists for Conservation (AFC), descrivere gli animali, isolati dal loro contesto, con una precisione che suscita ammirazione per la complessità, varietà e bellezza della natura in tutte le sue forme, significa anche essere consapevoli del valore della natura e della necessità che venga preservata”.
