Why Twitter Auto-Sharing Is Coming to an End

Update: May 18, 2023. It took a few weeks, but Twitter finally shut off our API access. Though we were in limbo for a bit, we can now confirm that our services have been disconnected and Twitter is no longer part of Jetpack Social.

In early April, we experienced an unexpected suspension of our Twitter API access. This access is what powers Jetpack Social, which in turn helps you automatically share your blog posts to Twitter. Though the service was restored that same day, it turns out that there were bigger changes looming on the horizon.

Twitter recently notified Automattic that it was dramatically changing the terms and pricing of the Twitter API. The cost increase is prohibitive for us to absorb without passing a significant price increase along to you, and we don’t see that as an option. We have attempted to negotiate a path forward, but haven’t been able to reach an agreement in time for Twitter’s May 1 cutoff.

Given that, we have decided to discontinue using the Twitter API.

For WordPress.com and Jetpack users, Twitter will no longer be part of Jetpack Social. However, we’re adding Instagram and Mastodon very soon. In the meantime, auto-sharing to Tumblr, Facebook, and LinkedIn still works as expected, and you can continue sharing your blog post links on Twitter manually through their app or desktop site.

We apologize for any inconvenience this causes for your website and marketing efforts. We wish the outcome had been different, but our customers are always our primary concern, and we’re not willing to compromise the experience or value you receive from WordPress.com and Jetpack.

If your recent experiences with Twitter have left you dissatisfied, go take Tumblr for a spin — we hear it’s quite a party over there.

I have been unable to post to Tumblr for a few months. I do not know why this has been the case.

“Auto-sharing to Facebook still works”? But I remember that was stopped a few years ago. Wasn’t it?

Just to tell you what it has said for a few years now: Facebook. “As of August 1, 2018, Facebook no longer allows direct sharing of posts to FGacebook Profiles. Connections to Facebook Pages remain unchanged. Learn more.”

        • Carolyn S.

That is correct. Facebook removed the ability to auto-share to personal profiles in 2018 when they removed that from their API, so we also had to remove it from auto-sharing. Sharing to Facebook Pages is unchanged and what the majority of people publish to. Manually sharing to a personal profile can still be done with no issues. I hope that clarifies things!

Well done WP for walking away. Many of us are thankful.

As the owner of three sites, I dislike the idea of paying extra towards an automatic link to Twitter on my blogs, especially as it’s a media I no longer use.

For those who wish, It takes less than a minute to copy the blog post address and publish on the media of their choice.

Will you be providing refunds to those of us who became paying subscribers when you recently started charging us for Jetpack Social? Without Twitter share, the product is no longer useful to me and is not what was advertised at the time I decided to pay for it.

Hello! Pulling up your account, it looks like you’re also publishing posts to Facebook and LinkedIn which would also fall under the paid plan you’re using. We’ll also be adding Mastadon and Instagram integrations around mid-June, so you’ll have even more options to share your posts.

If you still have questions or concerns, please contact the Jetpack Support team for help.

No worries. I closed my accounts when the new Head Twit closed his purchase. I’m happy not to be wasting money on a service I don’t need or want. Thanks Automattic!

Well, we have no doubt that Autommatic has tried everything to keep Twitter on board. Who would like to lose Twitter?? But we also know that Elon Musk has to earn back the 44 Billion US Dollars that he spent on this purchase. The same way in Politics, first they give you the money, later on you get the handcuffs.

Not surprised by this at all, kinda glad Automatic didn’t cave and integrate this cost, it isn’t worth it at this point. Looking forward to having more things like Mastadon worked on instead of paying huge API prices.

I quit posting to Twitter anyway for political and personal reasons. It’s a nefarious operation, particularly now under Musk.

So glad you are dropping Twitter!

As soon as Musk bought it, I deleted both of my years-old Twitter accounts, renewed my Tumblr account and opened one on Mastodon.

Look forward to your integration of Mastodon and Instagram!

One question: in e-mail says “From April 30, 2023 you will no longer be able to share your WordPress.com posts automatically to Twitter using Jetpack Social”. But reading your article here, I didn’t found this date.

This feature will be really discontinued today?

We worked up to the very end, but ultimately we were not able to come to an agreement in time for Twitter’s May 1 cutoff. Because of this, service will end on April 30th

Thanks. My experience has been that autoshared posts to Twitter get very few views on Twitter, as if their algorithms detect and don’t like them.

Why not offer a separate paid option for those who want Twitter integration?

It was something that we considered, however, the price Twitter was sticking with was more than Jetpack Social makes, so would have required making all Twitter posting paid and a dramatic price increase that didn’t sit well with us. I hope that clarifies things!

I just published a new post and see that automatic sharing to Twitter is still working (3 days after you said it would no longer work). Is it just a case of waiting for Twitter to cut the links?

Its ok for some, but not for all in this change, I guess. I will continue using the manual function. There are a lot of things not working like they should at twitter and I hope with time it improves but that is just wishful thinking until a real change there is made.

Twitter is very annoying! But I use it all the time, despite everything because ALL my contacts are still there and all the people I am interested in – some very longstanding contacts. I am not keen to move to Mastodon and Instagram drives me up the wall – it’s just a marketing platform.
As for Tumblr – I have an account and it automatically connects, but get so many “troll” accounts following me (ladies in bikinis) that I am getting fed up with it. No interesting connections.
LinkedIn is great and my blog still connects there. Also more interesting people there.
As for Facebook – I have NEVER been able to automatically link there. I think you have got that wrong.

A little sad, as I just started writing blog posts and wanted to have reach into the Twitter space as a lot of Tech folks and high level business folks do use Twitter. Honestly, a little upset but I completely understand. Can’t wait to try Mastodon integration, I guess that will give me a reason to try the new social platform. As long as you can replace one for the other I’m okay with that.
