Transfer Your Google Domains to WordPress.com—On Us

We’re also matching Google’s pricing for top-level domains.

A domain is your most valuable online asset. A great domain name says something about you—your personality, your work, your creative spark. People understand this intuitively: when coming up with new ideas for a business or website, we don’t start with design or specific content. We start by giving it a name.

But if your domain name is currently with Google Domains, things recently became complicated. You may have heard that your account has been sold to Squarespace. Everything is expected to transfer and close later this year.

Fortunately for you, you’re not locked into that deal. And we think we can do better. For the first million domains that move from Google to WordPress.com, we’ll pay your transfer fee, which also extends your registration for an additional year.

That’s just the beginning. Here’s our commitment to you when you bring your domain from Google to WordPress.com:

  • Your renewal price will be the same or even lower than what you were paying with Google Domains—and that goes for every one of the 400+ top-level domains (TLDs) we offer. This will also apply to existing WordPress.com customers across most domains, meaning that in many cases we’re lowering your prices!
  • This isn’t a temporary thing. We’re committed to keeping domain prices low for new-to-us domains, and will only raise them if our wholesale costs go up (we’ll run our domains business like Costco).

You may know WordPress.com as a leading platform for building stunning websites, but we’ve been a domain name provider for over a decade. You don’t even need a site or hosting plan to manage your domains with us.

And you’re getting much more than just a URL:

  • Performance: Our DNS speeds are faster than Google, GoDaddy, and DigitalOcean. But don’t take our word for it. Feel free to check for yourself at dnsperf.com.
  • Privacy: Unlike at many other registrars, privacy protection is free. (There are a few exclusions for non-U.S. domains.
  • Security: We install SSL for free for all sites hosted with us. And when you host your site at WordPress.com, we provide serious security features to keep your site running smoothly such as real-time backups, one-click restores, malware scanning, WAF (web application firewall), DDOS mitigation, and more.

What it really comes down to is that WordPress.com, along with the larger Automattic family, is committed to the open and inclusive web. Our mission is to democratize publishing for the entire world. Ultimately, we will always support your ability to truly own your content and identity on the web.

And it all starts with your domain. Transfer now and we’ll pay for an additional year of registration if your domain is registered before 1 July 2023.

How do I know who my domain is with? I always thought it was with WordPress. If that’s the case, do I need to do anything?

This announcement is for folks whose domains are through Google Domains. It sounds like you don’t, but if you know people who do, this is a great deal for them.

Hello 👋 I’m sorry to hear that. But, I am glad to tell you that you can have your domains at WordPress.com and use them for a site that is hosted anywhere else.

I transferred 3 domains over from Google Domains. My WordPress dashboard is still showing I need to verify my email address even though this has already been done via the verification email that was sent to me and all of my email forwarding for my transferred domains now doesn’t work. Any recourses to help with this? The chat in the dashboard is useless.

Hey there, thanks for reaching out! You should be able to reach out for help here – but, let us know one of the domains you’ve transferred and we’ll look to retrace some steps and get you set up.

Last year I move most of my domains from WordPress.com to Google since the prices went all up… now I move back! I’m glad the price is the same or even cheaper. Now, most of my domains are hosted here, except for that one linked to a Tumblr site, since is a “legacy domain” probably all settings will wear off if I move it.

1 year from the time the domain was planned to renew or 1 year from the time of transfer?

    • Adam Leone

Hey there! When the transfer to WordPress.com completes, your domain’s expiry date will be extended by an additional year. If you just renewed the domain with your current provider, you will not lose that renewal. We hope that helps!

I have transferred three domain names to WordPress.com, coming from Google Domains. Everything went fine except a persistent alert in a site, telling me that my site “needs an update” that I have to “correct”. No other hint but the concerned site is using Cloudflare DNS. Is this the reason?
    Thanks

Thank you for this offer – I am certainly considering it. Another feature that was quite unique to Google was free email forwarding for the domains – will you be able to replicate it?

Once again, this is a very generous offer, but just to point out that if you do intend to match Google’s prices, £10 for a .com domain was inclusive of VAT in Google in the UK, whereas wp.com’s isn’t, so comes to £12.

You need email forwarding for standalone domains, until you give that away, I will let google send me to squarespace.

When I try to export my .co.uk domain from Google it asks me for your TAG but when I look at https://registrars.nominet.uk/uk-namespace/registrar-agreement/list-of-registrars/ your tag is not there. Does that mean I can’t transfer my .co.uk domain to you? 😦
