WordPress.com’s Global Edge Cache (pronounced like “cash”) makes your site load faster for visitors around the world by taking advantage of our global network of data centers. This feature is always enabled on Free, Personal, and Premium sites. For our Business and Commerce sites, you can now manage the Global Edge Cache settings from the “Hosting Configuration” page.

What is global edge caching?

Say your website is hosted at one of our data centers in Amsterdam and a visitor from Cape Town wants to access it. The request from the visitor has to travel halfway around the world and back again to be fulfilled—that is, load the site on their device. 

Through some backend technical wizardry, our Global Edge Cache means that the request only needs to travel to Johannesburg and back, saving your visitor tens or even hundreds of milliseconds. It may not seem like much, but when you’re online, every millisecond counts. 

In short, enabling this caching feature brings your content closer to your visitors, wherever they might be. This means faster load times, less waiting, and a better overall experience. And as we all know, a happy visitor is more likely to become a loyal customer or follower.

Speed up your site with three simple steps

The WordPress.com Global Edge Cache is always enabled for sites on Free, Personal, and Premium plans. On a Business or Commerce site, you can enable Global Edge Cache from the Hosting Configuration page.

Here’s how to do it: 

  1. From your dashboard, go to Settings → Hosting Configuration.
  2. Scroll down to the “Cache” module.
  3. Click the toggle for  “Enable global edge caching for faster content delivery.”

Once you click that toggle, you’re all set!

Many hosts charge extra for this kind of edge caching, or require integration with a third-party provider. On WordPress.com, global edge caching is included on every plan, without any bandwidth restrictions.

    So there was no need for me to read this email. I wish WordPress would target its emails better and only send things like this to the people who actually need to read them – in this case “Business and Commerce sites”

    My site total counts of view max is 60 persons, and no heavy video or millions of pictures, most of them are texts. How come it can load this abnormally slow ? I don’t get it.

    When I enter Hosting Configuration, I only see an option to upgrade my plan to business. I currently have a free one. The article says this is for all plans, yet…
    Same with backing up my blog.

      Hello there! This particular feature is always active on Free, Personal, and Premium sites. However, for Business and Commerce sites, it is not enabled by default, which is why the Hosting Configuration is needed.

      As for backups, if your website is hosted on WordPress.com, we take care of all the necessary backups. Even in the unlikely event of a catastrophic incident where all our servers were obliterated by a massive meteor, rest assured that your data would remain secure. We would strive to have your site up and running again within three days (once the meteor situation has settled, of course).

      If you prefer to manually back up your site content, you can utilize the Export option located under Tools -> Export.

    I would love to see integration with Mastodon/Fediverse for all accounts, not just the business tier. So frustrating to know that Automattic purchased a plugin to add this functionality, but it’s only available to the tiers that can install plugins to begin with. The Mediverse is really starting to gain traction, I’d love to see us all be able to be a part of it.

      I have some exciting news for you! 😄

      The Jetpack team has recently introduced support for Mastodon and Instagram Business accounts. This means that even though we didn’t have the integration ready when we deprecated Twitter support, you can now enjoy posting automatically to Mastodon and Instagram on all WordPress.com plan levels!

        Oh my gosh, Carolyn, you are my hero. I had no idea this had been extended to Premium members, the last announcement I saw about this indicated that it required the ability to install plugins. Yes, this has definitely brought me much joy and for that, I thank you. 🙂

      Hello! If you would like to stop receiving emails from us, you can simply use the Unsubscribe button found in those emails. When you click on that button, it will remove you from our mailing list, but don’t worry, it won’t have any impact on your website. Your site will remain completely unaffected.

    Guys what is wrong with wordpress why everything i try to is telling me to upgrade I start upgrading from free to personal again it’s says i have to upgrade to premium and still can’t access single features that i wanted huh
